How does the touchpad on a laptop (the touchpad that you move your finger on, not the buttons), know the difference between a human finger and something such as your fingernail?
Also, what
The human body is basically, a complex battery (See the matrix).
Your skin has a very small electric charge, which the touchpad can detect. Fingernails, toenails, Hair, etc.. don't transfer this charge so they don't work.

The short answer is capacitance. The long answer is that basically your body generates electricty and the touch pad is able to detect that tiny amount of electricity as it passes through your hand. Inanimate objects don't have that, neither do your

How do I stop my touchpad from adjusting the screen size?
Apr 13, 2011 by Maria | Posted in Laptops & Notebooks
I have an Acer Aspire laptop and when I drag my finger across the touchpad too hard (doesn't really take much pressure), the screen size adjusts. I want to disable this feature as it drives me nuts!
In control panel, find your pointing device software, click on Mouse properties then the device setting folder tab, halfway down that window you will see a settings button, when that page opens select pinch zoom in the left navigation pane, and then un

How do I fix an unresponsive touchpad on an Acer 5516 laptop?
Dec 21, 2009 by bingerload | Posted in Laptops & Notebooks
I have an Acer 5516 laptop. Out of nowhere the touchpad completely stopped working on it. The pointer doesn't move, and both the left and right click buttons don't work either. I have access to a USB mouse
lol, you disabled it. There should be a button that you can click (on the computer) that reenables it. It is either in the top middle of the keyboard (near the screen) or near the top of the trackpad.

I spilled coffee on the touchpad last night and i turned off the computer immediately and turned it upside down for awhile. However the touchpad STILL wont work. Any tips on what i can do to get it to
You will need to contact Dell with this question. They sell both a "standard" warranty (which only covers things that are wrong with the way the laptop was made) and they sell extended warranties that cover "user damage" (spilled

Touchpads are computing devices that are used as an alternative to a mouse. Instead of using an external device such as a mouse all the functions can be done with the touch of a finger or by using a pen like device to manipulate the touchpad.

The highly anticipated HP TouchPad tablet will be released with more than 300 apps, according to the company. We counted just 256 on our review device the day before the launch, and the TouchPad can also run about 70 percent of the more than 8,000 apps designed for HP's WebOS phones. But they run in a little phone-sized box on the tablet’s 9.7-inch screen.

HP TouchPad CyanogenMod 7 Build THIS CLOSE to Complete ...
by Chris Burns
Certainly John Sheible isn’t looking back at his multi-pad purchase with regret as CyanogenMod 7 makes this tablet a fully functional and fully awesome Android tablet to behold! Touchscreen support is working, accelerometer is working, and all graphics drivers are ready to roll. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can get internet over a USB cable like the rest of the weirdos using alternate means for internet. You’ll be working hard on your unique 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon dual-core processor, appearing to work faster here than it ever did in review units before Android was planted.
Also note that with this release comes dual-boot to both Android and webOS, this meaning of course that you wont have to uninstall this tablet’s original operating system to get the newly minted CyanogenMod 7 build working inside. As for the touchscreen issues, which appear to be at the forefront of development woes here on the device as far as Android goes, the CyanogenMod developer in the video does not reveal the driver that was used to make this build work, but does note that it was originally, of course, another CyanogenMod build that made it happen.

CyanogenMod 7 on the HP TouchPad: Nearly everything but WiFi ...
by Brad Linder
It looks like the touchscreen is working, the accelerometer is working, and graphics drivers are in place. One of the few things that’s not yet working is WiFi . The developer in the video is getting an internet connection over a USB cable.
HP’s tablet ships with the webOS operating system, but early reviewers complained that the tablet felt sluggish at times when running webOS, despite the fact that it has a fast 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. But in this video, it looks like Android 2.3 Gingerbread runs about as well on the TouchPad as on any other smartphone or tablet I’ve seen.
Hopefully it won’t be long before CyanogenMod works out the kinks and uploads a build of CyangonMod 7 for anyone to download and install on the tablet. One of the best things about this particular project is that CM7 will dual boot with webOS, which means you won’t have to uninstall the original operating system to try out Android on the TouchPad.
TouchDroid team shows TouchPad on Android 2.3.5 with multitouch ...
by Edwin Kee
Remember the TouchDroid project that kicked off shortly after HP announced that they will no longer continue support for the webOS platform? Well, shortly after that, a group of developers known as TouchDroid decided to port over the Android operating system to the HP TouchPad, and now we have a video of Android 2.3.5 running on a TouchPad – complete with multitouch capability to boot!
The current firmware hacks receive their inspiration from Gingerbread builds of the Android operating system, and it remains to be seen whether such a project will be able to achieve similar results when running on Android 3.0 Honeycomb or not. Why not check out the video after the jump for more context?
CyanogenMod 7 Progressing Nicely for the HP TouchPad
by Kevin Krause
Yesterday came word that Team-Touchpad had delivered 10-point multitouch to their under-development Gingerbread ROM for the HP TouchPad, but we get the feeling the CyanogenMod 7 build currently in the works might steal its thunder. Ironically, the CyanogenMod team is claiming that the drivers used by the TouchDroid group were actually stolen from from an earlier build of CM7. Appropriately, multitouch is fully enabled in the latest TouchPad CM7 ROM along with hardware graphics acceleration. Still missing, however, is one rather important element: functional WiFi. The eventual plan is to work the hacked version of Android into an easily dual-bootable format along with the TouchPad’s native webOS. But don’t get too excited just yet, there is still much work to be done. A public build is not available at this time, but you can check out the above video to see how things are progressing.
