USB 2 only allows a maximum of 0.5A. But USB 1.1 only allows one setting – the ‘maximum’. In the past this was 0.5A. But gadget and USB makers soon took advantage of this loophole to make USB 2 ports in USB 1.1 mode to give out 1A.

So as long as the gadget doesn’t pretend to be USB 2 then it will try to draw current at whatever it can. So 2.5″ external harddrives often take 0.6-0.7A. Which is why they often come with a USB port splitter cable to use if your USB port can only manage 0.5A.

Most gadgets like smartphones use up to 1A. So USB chargers sold by Maplin use this USB 1.1 loophole to provide a cheap charger for less than a tenner.

USB’s offical answer is to place a low ohm resistor across D+ and D- pins which modern USB 2 & USB 3 gadgets detect this and allow high current loads.

Gradually a decent selection of Android Honeycomb tablets are finding their way onto the market, the Asus Eee Pad Transformer being one of these such devices.  The current three leading devices would be the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and this, but what makes it different?  What would make you choose the Asus over Motorola or Samsung?  They all would appear to have similar specs, design (oh my god, someone sue someone!) and dimensions, so why might you choose the Transformer?

Design

Despite what Apple say, there are only so many ways a tablet can look, but having said that, I feel Asus have slipped up a little here.  There are a few points I’m not keen on with the Transformer and I’ll start with the sharp edges.  When holding a Xoom or Tab, it feels comfortable, nice rounded edges fit into your hand.  The Transformer seems to feel ‘pointy’ and sharp, almost like when you have heavy shopping bags and the handle cuts into your hands.  It’s not as extreme as that, but there’s a marked difference from the Tab for example.

transformer so sick, i want it in my car! - Asus Transformer Tablet ...

Tried out the TF with dock (sitting on the passenger seat) driving up through Spain today. Used Sygic software. Coped OK with the tunnels under Madrid and in the North-West, picking up the signal as soon as the car emerged . Awesome 3D graphics coming through the mountain passes. But heavy drain on batteries - both batteries started at 100%, and after 7 hours dock was at 0% and TF at 34% I have used the TF (no dock) in my vehicle with the default Navigation. With streaming music from Pandora or Google Music Beta, GPS on and full brightenss (and tethered to WiFi on phone) I got about 6 hours instead of the normal 9. I made a car charger out of an old USB car charger - modified it to output 12...
