Archos is putting out a new tablet in September. Dubbed the Archos G9 , it will run the Android "Honeycomb" operating system, will pack a 1.5GHz Texas Instruments OMAP 4460 dual-core processor, and will come in both 8-inch and 10-inch models (priced at $370 and $470, respectively). But those specs aren't what's most interesting about the Archos G9. The tablet, CNET notes , has a massive hard disk drive--250 GB.
It's an unusual move, for tablet computing. 250 GB is a lot of storage, a number more typically associated with laptop and desktop computers. For comparison's sake, the iPad maxes out at 64 GB of storage; and there are some models that ship at just 16 GB. Also breaking with tablet tradition, the Archos uses a hard disk drive in place of a flash drive. The G9 is expected to use the Seagate Momentus Thin hard drive, though Archos has altered it slightly so that 4 GB of flash storage sits on top of the hard disk drive, allowing quick access to most-used data.
If the HP Touchpad $99 bonanza inspired your interest in a cheap tablet you were likely very disappointed when they sold out so quickly. You might get lucky and find one in the near future, as stores and people return them to HP. Or you might find that other budget tablets satisfy your longing just as well. Listed below are some alternatives, none of which hit the $99 bargain basement price, but might give people with simple needs what they want for less than an iPad or the higher priced Android tablets.
ASUS Eee Pad Transformer for $350 at WalmartThe ASUS Eee Pad Transformer restored my confidence that an Android Tablet could compete with the iPad. Sadly, customers don’t necessarily agree, since no Android tablet has sold as well as the iPad. But I believe that the Touchpad demand proves that poor sales of any non-Apple tablet has more to do with price than anything else. Now that WalMart sells the Transformer tablet for only $350 , I recommend you get one before they sell out.

Well, maybe the world has seen this before, but I certainly have not seen all of this in a tablet. A pair of Archos G9 tablets has been introduced with a list of features that are nearly unbelievable.
An Android 3.1 tab decision day may be coming soon. Back in June, Archos revealed two G9 models: the 8-inch 80 and the 10-inch 101.
A report out today said that the newest addition to the Archos line - the Archos G9 tablet - will have 250 gigabtyes of memory. That is a crazy number!
Article by at 2011-08-02 22:10:35Ah, so the manufacturers have to make up for shoddy software with higher specs? Not trolling here, just wondering why this is the case when the iPhone has lower specs than say, most modern Android phones but is still smoother.
But aren’t those applications/documents etc. being read from the drive? In that case having flash memory would provide the highest increase in speed… right?
Yeah, I saw someone (Paul O’Brien?) use the word “mehxcitement” or “mehdiocre” for this kind of thing. Still, for $280, I might take a look at the 80 when it comes out. I’ve been thinking about the Nook Color, but this would obviously be a much better deal for the price. Interesting move on the 4:3 aspect ratio for the 80. I guess it’s worked for the iPad, so it should be ok.
...These cool new Archos tablets start at 249€ for the 8″ 8GB 1Ghz, 299€ for the 10.1″ 8GB 1Ghz device. Consider US prices do not include VAT so similar $249 to $299 starting price can perhaps be expected in the US, though the $ is weak at the moment so US prices might start at something closer to $299 and $349 (to be confirmed officially tomorrow). You get 1.5Ghz processor speed when you choose the 16GB or 250GB versions that are slightly more expensive. Also check back for my further videos tomorrow on the Archos G9 series, I will ask them about the performance and more.
250GB 1.5Ghz: $469
For the confirmation if 8GB 1Ghz versions have 512MB RAM and 16GB and 250GB 1.5Ghz versions have 1GB RAM, you have to wait another few days or weeks for Archos to give us an official confirmation on the RAM capacity. As far as I understand, they may still be testing out the different types of RAM and capacities based on the latest Honeycomb 3.2 software most optimized for the high memory bandwidth of the OMAP4460 processor, to determine which type and capacity of RAM to use. Though these 1.5Ghz tablets are probably right now coming out of those factories so Archos should be able to confirm this at any moment now. Let’s try again tomorrow and the day after, when the engineers are not on their week-end break and can give us an answer.
...There’s still a discrepancy on the amount of RAM each tablet will carry, although the current understanding is the 8GB model will have 512MB, while the 16GB and 250GB will each have 1GB of RAM. We’ll just have to wait for official confirmation on that. But prices starting at $299 makes the Archos 80 G9 one of the cheapest Honeycomb tablets around. Fans of huge storage capacities will love the 150GB hard drive option, while most of us will settle right in the middle. European pricing will start at 249€ for the 8″ 8GB 1Ghz, and 299€ for the 10.1″ 8GB 1Ghz device.
