Leap pushes Muve Music onto Android, reaches 200000 user mark

.

"The existing digital music world was build for the computer and ported to the phone and not a customer who is enabled for a cash ecosystem," said Toig.

Toig explained that Muve felt confident about moving into the mobile music space after the success it had selling ringtones and saw this as an opportunity for growth. Customers were downloading over 400 songs a month, Toig reported, over Leap's 3G service.

"We created this as a download service not as a streaming service because a download service is a better experience and better on the network," said Toig.

Unlike with Apple's iTunes or Amazon's music store, the Muve service does not require a user to have a credit card. The music service is billed as part of the overall wireless service so the "customer feels like it is free in their plan," said Toig.

New Android Phones, from the Potent to the Pennywise

Something for everybody. That's the business strategy behind Google's Android mobile operating system, and in many ways it's a marvelous thing. You can get an Android handset on the carrier of your choice, from a variety of manufacturers. You can pick one with or without a physical keyboard. Big spenders can spring for a phone with the latest technologies; bargain hunters who are willing to commit to a contract can get a less cutting-edge handset for free. It's a radically different situation than with Apple's iPhone 4, which is just one phone — albeit a pretty spectacular one — and which is available only on AT&T and Verizon Wireless.

In the case of Motorola's new Droid Bionic, what an Android phone is offering is not so much something as everything. The latest model in Verizon Wireless's Droid line, the Bionic is probably the most potent smartphone on the market in terms of raw horsepower and bountiful features. (If history is any example, it'll soon be trumped by an even more souped-up model, which will itself have only a short reign at the top.)

Iridium Announces Expensive Global Satellite Hotspot

There is a new "Extreme" satellite phone, which is an evolutionary stage above the previous generation, but still looks like a cell phone you would have bought 15 years ago. Of course, for a satellite phone, the compact form factor is impressive.

The big news with this new satellite phone is a Wi-Fi access point that will enable your Android phone, Blackberry or iPhone to connect to the Internet anywhere - as long as you connect the "Axcess Point" to an Iridium 9555 or Extreme phone as well. The access point will sell for "less than $200" in Q4 and the Iridium phone is yours for about $1000. Add to that voice/data charges of $0.65 to $1.30 per minute, depending on the plan you purchase and you get yourself an outlandishly expensive Internet connection that blazes along at speeds that range from 2.4 kbps to 9.6 kbps.

[Update: Nevermind] Ice Cream Sandwich Coming to all 2011 Sony ...

&Nbsp;that their entire lineup of devices released in 2011 will receive an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Google’s Eric Schmidt has confirmed an October/November launch window for the new Android build, but it is likely current smartphones won’t see an update until some months later. Sony Ericsson, once lambasted for their lack of timely software updates, has improved on the delivery of the latest Android features, but no timeframe was given as to when we might expect Ice Cream Sandwich to begin trickling down to handsets currently running Gingerbread and earlier.

[Update]: Looks like all of that was false. Sony Ericsson has mentioned to SlashGear that no such decision regarding updates has been made. Carry on, folks. [ SlashGear ]

Microsoft Adds ViewSonic, Acer to its Android Cash Grab

Microsoft has reached licensing agreements with ViewSonic and Acer that will see the two companies pay the computer giant an undisclosed fee for every Android device sold. The news, which Microsoft confirmed today, follows similar deals struck with companies such as HTC, deals that provide the software maker with an estimated three to five times the revenue earned from sales of their own Windows Phone platform. The licensing deals also cover upcoming devices using Google’s Chrome OS.

Microsoft is quick to point out that their method of solving intellectual property disputes is “commercially reasonable” to “address Android’s IP issues,” perhaps taking a jab at competitor Apple’s insistence on suing first, settling later. Microsoft is perfectly happy leaving the competition on the market — rather than forcing sales bans — provided they can turn a few dollars off of it.

Waterproof Fujitsu LTE F-01D Joins Galaxy Tab 10.1 on Japan's ...

NTT DoCoMo is gearing up to release their first LTE-enabled tablets , a pair that includes the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a new slate from Fujitsu, the ARROWS Tab LTE F-01D. While the Galaxy Tab is the same device we have become familiar with in other parts of the world, the Fujitsu tablet is something new altogether. Along with its dual-core OMAP 4 CPU, 10.1-inch screen, and Android Honeycomb installation, the ARROWS Tab features a waterproof design and “Hand Gesture Control.” The latter feature apparently allows for touch-free control of the tablet while the former allows Fujitsu’s first Honeycomb tablet to be the perfect bathtub companion.

Nvidia CEO Confirms Quad-core Android Tablets Coming By The ...

NVIDIA’s CEO and president Jen-Hsun Huang confirmed rumors that Nvidia’s much hyped quad-core “Kal-El” Tegra 3 processor would indeed be running in tablets before the end of the year. Just like in the dual-core race, this will once again allow Nvidia to claim “firsties,” making them first on the market with a quad-core chipset. This should keep them ahead of rivals like Qualcomm who isn’t expected to deliver a similar quad-core processor until late this year or early next.

If you were one of those not swayed by current generation dual-core smartphones and waiting patiently for a quad-core this year, you may want to reconsider. Originally, Nvidia predicted they would have a quad-core phone in 2011 but Huang indicated there were only quad-core tablets in the works for this year. Sorry, guys. Who’s ready for a quad-core, Ice Cream Sandwich tablet!?

Potential Fix Found For Motorola Photon 4G “Sleep of Death” Issue ...

Quite a few Motorola Photon owners have been experiencing an issue with their device in what they are calling “The Sleep of Death.” Apparently, the device will shut down at random times without warning forcing users to power back on and check for important missed calls and/or texts. MoPho users took to our very own Android Forums to address the issue though it seems nobody could figure out exactly what was going on and if this was a software issue or a hardware one. This ultimately lead many users back to their Sprint stores for hardware replacements.

As it turns out, AF member 408SandShark seems to have found a possible fix. Apparently, the battery isn’t secure inside the phone and when the device is moved, this causes the battery to lose a connection with the terminals on the device, making the device shut off. The fix? Well, placing some kind of cushioned tape or folded piece of paper in between the battery cover and battery seems to hold everything in place. 408SandShark claims this has remedied “The Sleep of Death” issue for him. Give it a try and let us know if it works for you. Good luck!
