Google Discussed Playing Favorites With Android, Memo Shows
The memo and other documents were released earlier this week in a U.S. court hearing Oracle's lawsuit against the search giant for allegedly using Java code in the development of Android.
One document filed in the court on Tuesday described a "lead device concept." That concept, according to the internal memo, is to "give early access to the software to partners who build and distribute devices to our specification (i.e., Motorola and Verizon). They get a non-contractual time to market advantage and in return they align to our standard."
Some industry observers have suggested that this approach would only apply to a Google-issued device, such as the Nexus, but others argue that it goes
Android apps less profitable than iPhone apps
Android app developers make much less money from paid apps than iPhone developers do. A big reason: Android developers face rampant piracy that cuts into profits.
Those findings from a survey of 75 Android app developers in 22 countries have just been released by research firm, Yankee Group.
Key findings:
Piracy is a problem for Android and Google isn't helping. Among Android developers, 27 percent see piracy as a huge problem and another 26 percent see it as somewhat of a problem. And 53 percent say Google is too lax in its Android Market policies. Three-quarters of Android developers say it's easy to copy and republish an Android app. Almost half say that piratingAndroid or iOS: Who travels more? Tripit knows
One of my personal “must have” free travel apps, Tripit, gained both an Android upgrade and a paid version that removes ads on Thursday. Along with the news comes some interesting travel data from Tripit’s mobile user base.
For those not familiar with the app, here’s a quick summary. After booking online travel, you simply forward travel confirmation emails to plans@Tripit.com. The service quickly scans the mail and creates a full itinerary in the Tripit application. All of your trip information is available in one place, ready to share and you use to create a Google Calendar for your trips.
The latest update for Android, version 1.8, is available for free in the Android Market and brings a bit of facelift. That’s good, because while the app has always been useful on my Android phones, the iOS version always looked better and was a little easier to navigate. Tripit says the updated Android app looks cleaner — and I agree — plus the software takes up 30 percent less storage space, supports Google sign-in, and is ad-free for $3.99 .

Viewsonic's $200 ViewPad 7e Android tablet now available for pre ...
Viewsonic has been at the low-cost Android tablet for some time now, and it showed no signs of letting up on that effort at IFA last week, where it debuted its new ViewPad 7e . If that managed to pique your interest, you'll be glad to know that the device is now available for pre-order for $199.99 (though there's still no promised ship date). That will buy you a 7-inch screen, a 1GHz Cortex-A8 processor, Android 2.3 for an OS, 4GB of built-in storage, a microSD card slot for further expansion, and even a mini HDMI port that will let you output full 1080p video.
Microsoft continues to profit off Android
While sales of Microsoft’s burgeoning Windows Phone platform lag, the company continues to find significant revenue streams elsewhere in the mobile industry. Specifically, Google’s Android partners have proven to be an invaluable asset for the Redmond-based tech giant. Microsoft’s revenue from royalties HTC is forced to pay on each Android phone it sells is estimated to be between three and five times the company’s Windows Phone revenue, which could help explain why Microsoft has been so quiet to date when it comes to marketing its new mobile OS. Now, Microsoft has announced new agreements with ViewSonic and Acer that will bring in cash from two more Android vendors. Read on for more.

Technolog - Next Android update: Ice Cream Sandwich in October?
Google will likely roll out its latest sweet-themed Android update, Ice Cream Sandwich, as early as October, said executive chairman Eric Schmidt, who released that detail during the recent Dreamforce conference in San Francisco.
Schmidt was the keynote speaker at the event, which focuses on cloud computing (but also featured a gala performance of Metallica! Metallica!). At the 30:20 mark of the video below, he talks about the rollout, which could also happen as late as November. Schmidt's specific — and all too brief — wording is this:
What he doesn't say is how many crappy Android devices are decomissioned. My boss has gone through 6 Droid X's, 2 Global 2's and just activated a Droid X 2 that 'big red' sent him as his 9th replacement. Not to mention all the added bloatware that you can't remove from these devices. When will the phone companies and software companies give us a platform that just simply works? And if we don't use or want an app, let us delete the stupid thing. It's no wonder people are rooting their phones.
