HP Touch pad: A Tablet for productivity?

In the family of mobile operating systems, Apple’s iOS is the eldest child with a wall full of trophies, while Google’s Android is its younger sibling, trying to prove to dad that iOS didn’t get all of the good genetics.

Yet, there is a forgotten middle child: HP’s webOS. First developed by Palm as a successor to Palm OS, HP’s purchase of Palm didn’t create as many opportunities for market adoption as originally anticipated. Since webOS’ introduction in 2009, we’ve only seen a handful of devices with the company’s mobile operating system. Within the same period, multiple manufacturers collectively launched a slew of Android-based phones.

Fujitsu Stylistic Q550

The 10.1-inch touch screen is covered with chemically strengthened glass, designed to resist scratching from fingers and stylus taps, as well as reducing glare. The display itself offers 400 nits of brightness and a 1,280 by 800 resolution, letting you enjoy 720p video. A full sized HDMI port also lets you enjoy content on an HDTV. The display is coupled with a built-in mono speaker, and while the sound wasn't terrible, the lack of stereo sound may disappoint some.

The Q550 uses the same digital pen as the Motion Computing CL900 ($1,250 street, 3.5 stars), a powered stylus that takes a single AAAA–yes, quadruple A–battery. For some tasks, like handwriting, the pen is a perfect tool. It's also the simplest way to compensate for the fact that the smaller tablet display makes it difficult to use your fingers to click on icons and scroll bars in Windows 7. A button on the stylus lets you perform the equivalent of a right-mouse click without the tap-and-hold maneuver used on most Windows tablets.

Upbeat about new Acer tablet

CONCEPTS Computer is upbeat the just-launched Acer Iconia Tab W501 would outperform its predecessor in sales, citing the tablet is the answer for business travellers who want the convenience of a tablet, with the functionality and specifications of a laptop.

"This is a tablet computer, which is not like a tablet which has apps and so on, so this is for businessmen who need to travel and need the portability of a tablet," said Zul Abdul Rahman, marketing executive at Concepts Computer.

The W501 would retail at $868 (S$867).

Zul said the first tablet laptop model launched earlier this year was well received among Concepts customers, who feel they are getting "value for money".

Acer Iconia Touchbook & Acer Iconia TAB W500 - The Futuristic ...

ACER Iconia Series – Have you seen the movie Minority Report by Tom Cruise way back 2002? Well, this article is not about his movie but when I first saw and read ACER Iconia from one of my favorite magazines last night, this movie flashed back into my head. If you’re wondering why, get a load of what this monstrous notebook has to say. For me, it’s already on my wish list for this year – something that I would really want to have.

Are you getting tired of cleaning your keyboard and touchpad? Well, worry no more because ACER Iconia is now here – button-”less” notebook.

ACER Iconia was first showcased at ACER’s Global Press Event in New York last November 2010, wherein the company’s talking nothing but “touch” and they say with their new laptop you’ll experience lots of touch and more touch – they said it right. And recently, ACER Philippines together with Microsoft Philippines launched their Iconia bandwagon – the 14-inch dual touchscreen Iconia Touchbook and 10.1-inch Iconia Tab. The Iconia Touchbook runs on Windows 7 and inside it is Intel’s Core i5 480M processor with 4GBs of RAM. And yeah, you can also stretch applications (any Windows compatible applications) such as browsers on both screens, while the bottom screen can turn into a virtual keyboard with a virtual thumbpad whenever you press it with your palm – lots of virtual, eh? Way too cool, isn’t?

I'd say this fits my needs enough for me to give it five stars but the technology isn't up to perfect enough for me to give it a five star recommendation to others. Programs do force close occasionally and some of my apps don't work with Honeycomb. There have been a couple of times I've wished I got the Win 7 version so I could get some of my bookkeeping done on my tablet but over all I'm happy. If you've been around computers for a little while and can remember the blue screen of death days with Win 95 or 98, you'll be familiar with the kind of mild annoyances newer software/hardware combinations bring you. It's kinda like that. If you've got an Android phone you're probably used to it, too...

Before you read my review, I’d like to point out that you may see Acer pictures on Amazon that make it look like different machines with different prices. They are not. There are two models available the W500 (this model) has Windows home premium and W500P, has windows professional. Now on to my review of the W500:

Received my Acer Iconia 32gb windows 7 W500 Tablet/ netbook from Amazon yesterday and immediately I unwrapped and fired it up mounted in the keyboard. After starting, I removed Adobe reader 9.1, Acer games, Ebay world, Skype4.1, and reloaded Skype 5.3, added Firefox with the grab and drag add on for easy tablet use, added sumatra pdf (takes no space compared to adobe9.1, removed live essentials and more. My previous computer was a Asus T91mt tablet/netbook, right away I noticed the following about this Acer, screen is much brighter and more detailed, audio is louder especially on earphones, installed my 32gb SD card from my old computer with all my files and I could easily transfer to various folders on the computer. I adjusted the stick mouse and found it easy to operate. (But I am a old IBM user so you may want to use a USB mouse while in the keyboard mount) I have read reviews that the screen is top heavy and could fall out of the keyboard. Not so. Although the screen is heavier than the keyboard, I found it sits attached to the keyboard very nicely, I even leaned the screen and keyboard way back and it still would not tip and in fact I’m typing this review on my lap now!!! (Leaning the screen forward toward you while in the keyboard it could come out since that’s how you remove the screen) Haven’t experimented with the tablet yet, but I can see it is well built! Very well built! As a test, I played a 1080 blu-ray movie (the Mask) from my SD Card on this unit and it played with out a glitch. This is a movie that would not play on any of my previous netbooks and I’ve owned 4 of them. I have read in other reviews that this computer handles everything thrown at it. I also read the match up of the INTEL dual core 550N against this AMD C-50 CPU/GPU and the AMD blew away the intel. It took AMD 5 years to develop this special processor, a blend of a Processor and a graphics chip on one die! Very Incredible. AMD calls it a APU. Goodbye CPU! I can do everything on this machine that I do on my desktop, connected to my home wireless N in seconds, connected to my wireless HP network printer in seconds. More to come! So far very happy! This unit blows away my former Asus T91mt tablet/netbook! I am so glad that I didn’t get sucked into the hype of all the latest tablets with honeycomb 3. I’ll keep my android software on my phone where it belongs! I must mention there is a review by Sticky on the other listed Acer W500 on Amazon that was very passionate and convinced me to purchase this computer and he was right on with his review!

Acer Iconia Tab W500 Review

Bored with your notebook? You should see a product made by Acer Iconia W500 series.

Notebook or a tablet? I confused how to categorized it. You can use Acer Iconia W500 like a tablet with a touchscreen that comes with multitouch functionality and can also be used like a notebook complete with a keyboard and track pointers. That way, you can use it as your style and needs. If its predecessor, the Acer Iconia A500, using the Android operating system 3.0 Honeycomb, Acer Iconia W500 uses the operating system Windows 7 Home Premium. For those of you who are used to using OS Win 7, this course will greatly help you in using these tablets. Perhaps, things you need to get used to is how to use it because the device consists of two parts that can be separated. If you remove the screen, you can operate it like a tablet in general.
